7-Day Taiwan Itinerary: Taipei, Jiufen and Sun Moon Lake
This 7-day Taiwan itinerary combines Taipei’s neighborhoods and food markets, a day trip to Jiufen, and two nights at Sun Moon Lake. It suits first-time visitors who want city sights and lake scenery using public transport, with time to enjoy each stop.
The route: Taipei 3 nights → Sun Moon Lake 2 nights → Taipei 1 night. Arrive and depart through Taoyuan International Airport. Day 1 is arrival and Day 7 is departure, giving you six hotel nights and five days between flights. Transfer days include less sightseeing.

Taiwan itinerary at a glance
| Day | Main plan | Overnight |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive; local dinner and a short walk | Taipei |
| 2 | Longshan Temple, Dihua Street, Taipei 101 area | Taipei |
| 3 | Jiufen day trip; relaxed evening | Taipei |
| 4 | HSR to Taichung; bus to Sun Moon Lake | Sun Moon Lake |
| 5 | Lakeside cycling or walking; one additional stop | Sun Moon Lake |
| 6 | Return to Taipei; optional neighborhood visit | Taipei |
| 7 | Airport transfer and departure | None |
This is a north-and-central Taiwan route. Taichung is the transport connection rather than another hotel stop. Adding Alishan, Tainan and Kaohsiung would require removing activities or extending the trip. If your priority is southern cities, build a different route around them.
Days 1–3: Taipei and Jiufen
Day 1: Arrive in Taipei
Keep your first day flexible. After immigration and luggage collection, use the airport’s current ground-transport information to choose rail, bus or taxi for your hotel. Airport rail and Taipei Metro are separate systems; check the terminal, final station and any onward transfer before buying tickets. See Taoyuan Airport’s official website.
As a planning allowance, leave three to four hours between landing and settling into a central hotel. Queues, traffic and late arrivals can change this. Eat close to your accommodation and take a short walk in Ximending only if it is convenient. Save ticketed attractions for another day. Overnight: Taipei.
Day 2: Old Taipei and the Taipei 101 area

Start at Longshan Temple, allowing about an hour to look around respectfully without interrupting worship. Continue to Dihua Street for its historic shopfronts and food shops, then stop for lunch. These are separate neighborhoods, so budget time for the MRT and walking rather than treating them as adjacent sights.
In the afternoon, travel to the Taipei 101 area. Choose between a paid observatory visit and exploring the surrounding streets and shops. Check the observatory’s availability and visibility before committing to a ticket. Allow approximately two to three hours for this part of the day, including a break.
For dinner, choose one night market rather than crossing the city to sample several. Ningxia suits a return toward the central and western districts; Raohe is an alternative if you finish farther east. Keep enough time for the journey back. The official Taipei Metro website provides route maps and first and last train information. Overnight: Taipei.
Day 3: A day trip to Jiufen

Jiufen’s hillside streets make a different kind of day from central Taipei. Leave after breakfast and allow roughly one and a half to two hours each way as a provisional door-to-door allowance, depending on your starting point, service and queues. Choose a direct bus where convenient, or plan a rail connection through Ruifang with an onward bus or taxi.
Spend three to four hours around the Old Street, stopping for lunch and a tea break. The lanes involve steps, slopes and crowds; wear shoes with grip and carry rain protection. The Taiwan Tourism Administration’s Jiufen guide gives destination background and access information.
Keep Shifen as an optional substitution rather than a compulsory second stop. Combining both requires extra connections and makes this a longer day. Return to Taipei for dinner and prepare a small, manageable bag for the lake journey. If severe weather affects hillside transport, switch to a city museum or indoor activity after checking its opening day. Overnight: Taipei.
Days 4–5: Sun Moon Lake
Day 4: Taipei to Sun Moon Lake
Take Taiwan High Speed Rail from Taipei to HSR Taichung, then change to the Sun Moon Lake tourist shuttle. HSR Taichung is not the central Taichung railway station. Check the departure point printed on your bus information before leaving the rail station.
The lake’s official access guide lists the shuttle connection from HSR Taichung and gives approximately 90 minutes for that bus leg. Train choice, waiting time and road traffic affect the complete journey. Allow roughly four to five hours from a Taipei hotel to your lake accommodation, including lunch or a connection break. Verify the THSR timetable and official Sun Moon Lake access instructions for your dates.
Stay near Shuishe if straightforward arrival and departure logistics matter most. Confirm luggage storage if you reach the hotel before check-in. Use the remaining afternoon for a short lakeside walk and an early dinner; do not reserve an activity that depends on a tight arrival time. Overnight: Sun Moon Lake.
Day 5: Enjoy the lake at a slower pace

Choose a morning walk or bicycle ride on a suitable lakeside section, allowing two to three hours with stops. Rent a bike only if you are comfortable riding it, check its condition and agree the return time. A full circuit is a different undertaking from an easy waterside section; review gradients, trail conditions and your fitness before selecting a route.
After lunch, choose one additional outing: a visit to Wenwu Temple by suitable local transport, or a boat journey to Ita Thao if services and conditions permit. Check return connections before setting off. The official lake tourism website provides attraction information, transport updates and construction notices.
Avoid trying to fit cycling, multiple temples, every pier and the ropeway into one day. If rain makes outdoor activities unappealing, shorten the route, take a long meal break and reassess locally. A boat service is an optional activity, not a necessary connection in this hotel plan. Overnight: Sun Moon Lake.
Days 6–7: Return and departure
Day 6: Return to Taipei
Leave the lake after breakfast, reversing the bus and HSR connection. Allow about four to five hours door to door as a planning estimate. Do not book an inflexible afternoon admission immediately after the train arrival. A Taipei hotel near a useful MRT connection makes the final evening and airport transfer easier.
If you arrive early, spend the afternoon around Zhongshan’s shops and cafés or revisit a favorite food area. If transport is delayed, keep the plan to dinner. Staying in Taipei tonight separates the lake transfer from your international departure, though no itinerary can remove disruption risk. Overnight: Taipei.
Day 7: Departure
Work backward from your airline’s check-in requirements and airport terminal. Budget for the hotel-to-station journey, waiting, airport transport and terminal access. An early flight may need a prearranged transfer or an airport-area final night. An evening departure might allow a short walk near the hotel after confirming luggage storage. Avoid a distant excursion before flying.
Transport and accommodation
Taipei: Taipei Main Station is useful for intercity departures, while Ximending offers plentiful dining and an MRT connection. Compare the actual walking route from a hotel, especially with luggage; a station name in the listing does not guarantee a short walk.
Sun Moon Lake: Shuishe favors this bus-based itinerary. Ita Thao offers another lakeside setting but adds a local connection to the main transfer plan. Check the last bus, any hotel shuttle and the luggage arrangements before selecting a room.
Tickets: Compare two individual HSR journeys with any pass you qualify for; do not assume a pass saves money on this limited route. Taipei local-transport payment does not replace a reserved HSR ticket. Keep some cash for small food stalls and services, and verify current payment rules with each operator.
One-week budget
Use this worked example to organize your budget, then replace each allowance with prices for your dates. These are illustrative planning amounts in New Taiwan dollars (TWD), not verified hotel quotes or a claimed average. Accommodation assumes two adults sharing one room.
| Category | Calculation per person | Allowance |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation | TWD 3,000 per room × 6 nights ÷ 2 | TWD 9,000 |
| Food | TWD 800 × 7 days | TWD 5,600 |
| Intercity and airport transport | Provisional combined allowance | TWD 3,000 |
| Local transport and day-trip travel | Provisional combined allowance | TWD 1,500 |
| Admissions and lake activities | Depends on selected activities | TWD 2,000 |
| Total before contingency | TWD 21,100 |
Adding 15% contingency gives TWD 24,265 per person. International flights, insurance, entry-related costs and major shopping are excluded. Solo travelers should recalculate the room cost; weekends, holidays, lake-view rooms and private transfers can change the total substantially.
Booking and weather checklist
Book flights first, matching the six-night plan to your actual arrival and departure times. Then secure accommodation, compare the dated HSR departures and check the lake bus connection. Reserve any must-do paid attraction once the travel days are settled. Confirm cancellation conditions rather than booking every optional activity in advance.
Check forecasts for Taipei and Nantou separately through the Central Weather Administration. Keep Day 2 and Day 3 interchangeable if the weather favors Jiufen on a different day. During disruptive weather, follow operator announcements and local instructions before attempting hillside travel or water activities.
Frequently asked questions
Is seven days enough for Taiwan?
Seven calendar days allow a focused first visit to Taipei, one nearby day trip and Sun Moon Lake. They do not provide seven full sightseeing days if arrival and departure are included. Extend the trip or replace stops if southern cities or mountain areas are your main priority.
Can you follow this itinerary without renting a car?
Yes: the proposed route uses urban rail, HSR and buses, with walking at the destinations. Check services for your dates and choose accommodation close to practical stops. Travelers needing step-free routes should confirm station access, hotel entrances and Jiufen’s walking conditions before booking.
What if you prefer fewer hotel changes?
Spend all six nights in Taipei and use the middle days for nearby outings, such as Jiufen or Beitou, after checking access and opening information. This removes the two lake transfer days and suits a slower city-based trip.
